Men Of The Future is a non-profit organization that comes to Central Islip High School once a week to meet with the young men of CIHS and teach the importance of aspiring to greatness. Scholarships and community service is important to our club because we want our members to build qualities and skills that lead to a strong character. The MOFT club provides all members with opportunities for scholarships and community service hours.
In addition to community service, we also attend field trips that will give us character building experiences. For example, on November 8 we went to the Tilles Center at LIU. We did a college tour to Stony Brook on November 14. We participated in The Chi-Rho Achievement week program. Then, in December, we helped the Wyandanch youth center with their toy drive as well as the Christmas party at CIHS. We traveled to NYC to see the play MJ the Musical. In addition to going out into the community to learn, we also invited guests in to provide workshops. We had guests speak with our members on topics such as the justice system, careers, law and order, along with police work and the steps they could take to become an officer.
Mr. Hudson is one of the advisors of MOTF, serving as a role model for over 3 years. He is also a former teacher here at Central Islip High School as a chemistry teacher. In an interview with Mr. Hudson during one of the meetings of MOTF, I asked him why this club was so important to him. He stated, “This club teaches you more about reciprocity and responsibility.” Mr. Hudson is joined by another advisor, Mr. Cruz, in inspiring the young men of CIHS. He is an executive for IBM, a multinational technology and consulting company, and has a lot to offer.
Mrs. Mitchell is another role model from our school community that has been working with MOTF for almost 20 years. When asked about the club, Mrs. Mitchell said, “It is important to expose young men to different situations.” She feels this way because she thinks that, as young people in general, we like to stay in our comfort zone. When we go out into the world we can see all of the chances and opportunities that you can have in life which can make you change our mindset.
When I first came to MOTF it was truly an unexpected experience for me because I didn’t know what to expect. During my freshman year, I was introduced to a community of our own; a family. The students that take on the roles of officers try their hardest to make sure that the members can experience the most out of life. They show them that there is more in the world that they can have than they might think.
We are currently reading a book called Chop Wood, Carry Water: How to Fall in Love with the Process of Being Great, by Joshua Medcalf. This book explores the virtues associated with having patience while pursuing your dreams.
Look for a Men of the Future member, or listen for information in September, if this club sounds like something you would be interested in!
