Using a Chromebook helped me to stay on task with my assignments and other things that I had trouble doing before receiving the device. From 7th grade to now, using Chromebooks made me more organized which helped me finish my assignments on time and accomplish goals. While every student has been issued a Chromebook, not every student can be found using one. Reasons for this include the device being lost, broken, or as one 11th grader stated: “[They] are slow!”
So what can you do if your Chromebook gets slow, or doesn’t hold a charge? What happens if the screen is broken or keys popped off? What if you do not connect to the school WiFi or you are locked out of your account? If you have been afraid to go to the main office to tell them about your problem, don’t worry. Do not be embarrassed– they have seen it all! Bring your device to the Main Office and tell them you need some technical support. They will have you fill out a form explaining the problem. If it can be fixed, it will be fixed and returned to you in a few days. If it cannot be fixed, you will get a new one.
Many students are worried about whether or not they will have to pay to repair their device. If the issue is technical and not caused by student action such as issues with the hard drives, batteries, processor, charging issues, WiFi issues, memory, or a crashed system, there is no fee charged– even if it has happened multiple times. If the issue is due to accidental or unintentional damage (including vandalism), there is NO fee charged for the first incident. For the second incident, the fee is $25; $50 for the third; $100 for the fourth; $200 for the fifth; and $400 for each incident after that.
If your device is stolen, you should also not panic. Stolen devices should be immediately reported to the Main Office. The device will then be locked remotely and useless to anyone until it is returned to the district. In most instances you will receive a replacement device.
The most important thing to remember is that with normal use, your Chromebook will be a reliable tool for you. Pay attention to the care tips suggested and do not intentionally damage your device (even if it would make a “funny” TikTok). Not only could this result in your personal injury, but it can also result in fees being charged.
