In recent years, social media has undoubtedly shaped the way people view politics, with many vastly popular talents using their platforms to share their opinions. Many of the likes, shares, and comments on these posts are among new voters, which raises the question, how much political power do celebrities really have? Every word concerning the upcoming 2024 election has the power to influence people, especially when these statements are coming from those who young voters look up to.
Shortly after the presidential debate on September 10, Taylor swift took to her 283 million Instagram followers,
announcing her support for presidential and vice presidential candidates, Kamala Harris and Tim Walz. Swift added, “I’m voting for Kamala Harris because she fights for the rights and causes I believe need a warrior to champion them. I think she is a steady-handed, gifted leader and I believe we can accomplish so much more in this country if we are led by calm and not chaos. I was so heartened and impressed by her selection of running mate, Tim Walz, who has been standing up for LGBTQ+ rights, IVF, and a woman’s right to her own body for decades.” The post has received over 11 million likes.
Swift is no stranger to advocating for her beliefs in the past. During the 2018 midterm elections, she denounced the Republican candidate for Tennessee Senator, Marsha Blackburn, comparing her beliefs to that of 1950s tradition. Although Blackburn went on to win her race by a mere 11 points, voter registration spiked following Swift’s statement.
With the election steadily approaching, widespread tension and anxiety has taken over the country and even as prominent voices are swaying opinions, it is important to remember that every vote counts.
